Canadaís New First Lady, Zhang Mo Prevents Singaporean Clean Sweep in New Delhi

Crowned Pan American champion in October 2011 in the Mexican city of Guadalajara, Zhang Mo added to her trophy collection on Friday 10th May 2013 by winning the Womenís Singles title at the Commonwealth Championships in New Delhi.

Seeded no.5, she accounted for Singaporeís Yu Mengyu at the final hurdle in a close seven games duel (11-6, 11-6, 11-6, 5-11, 10-12, 8-11, 11-8), after having ousted Indiaís Manika Batra, the no.8 seed, in an equally hard fought contest in the penultimate round (11-9, 10-12, 12-10, 6-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-6).

In the corresponding semi-final, Yu Mengyu ended the host nationís aspirations by overcoming Mouma Das, the no.11 seed, in six games (11-8, 15-17, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-4).....

Men Centre Stage but Leading Ladies Stumble En Route to New Delhi Semi-Finals

The top four seeds in the Menís Singles event at the Commonwealth Championships in New Delhi, all progressed safely to the semi-final stage of proceedings following successful endeavours on the penultimate day of play, Thursday 9th May 2013.

Singaporeís Zhan Jian, Li Hu and Chen Feng all booked penultimate round places, as did the host nationís Sharath Kamal Achanta.

However, in the Womenís Singles event it was a different story, Yu Mengyu, also from Singapore, was the only one of the top four seeds to book a place in the last four.....

Zhan Jian and Zhou Yihan Mixed Doubles Champions, Singaporean Success Continues

Singapore continued their dominance of affairs at the Commonwealth Championships in New Delhi on Thursday 9th May 2013; gold medallists in both the Menís and Womenís Team events one day earlier, they added the Mixed Doubles title to their collection.

Zhan Jian and Zhou Yihan combined to secure the top prize.

They overcame Englandís Andrew Baggaley and Hannah Hicks in the quarter-finals (11-1, 11-6, 11-9), followed by success against Malaysiaís Muhud Shakirin Ibrahim and Beh Lee Wei in the semi-finals (11-1, 5-11, 11-8, 11-3) before overcoming Indiaís Soumyajit Ghosh and Mouma Das, the fourth seeds, in the final (11-3, 15-13, 11-7).....

Hat-Trick of Titles for Singapore, Gold in Jaipur, Gold in Glasgow, Now in New Delhi

Favourites for gold, Singapore won the Menís Team title at the Commonwealth Championships in New Delhi on Wednesday 8th May 2013 and thus completed a hat-trick of titles in the event.

They won in Jaipur in 2007 and in Glasgow in 2009.

At the final hurdle they overcame the host nation by three matches to nil with the trio formed by Zhan Jian, Li Hu and Ma Liang in no mood for charity.

Zhan Jian gave Singapore the perfect start by beating Soumyajit Ghosh in three straight games (13-11, 11-8, 11-3). ....

Singapore in Seventh Heaven, Womenís Team Title Retained in New Delhi

Led by Feng Tianwei with Yu Mengyu and Zhou Yihan in support, Singapore won the Womenís Team event at the Commonwealth Championships in New Delhi, on Wednesday 8th May 2013, beating the English trio of Kelly Sibley, Joanna Parker and Ho Tin Tin in the final.

It is the seventh time that Singapore has clinched the title and the seventh in succession.

They won in 1997 in Glasgow and as the Millennium dawned in 2000 on home soil; in 2001 in New Delhi they retained the top prize before succeeding in Kuala Lumpur in 2004, Jaipur in 2007 and one again in Glasgow in 2009.....

Kelly Sibley Maintains Form to Guide England to Womenís Team Final

Unbeaten on the first two days of play, Kelly Sibley maintained her form to guide England to the final of the Womenís Team event at the Commonwealth Championships in New Delhi, following a tense semi-final win over the host nation on Tuesday 7th May 2013.

The 24 year old gave her team the perfect start by beating Moumas Das in a full distance seven games encounter (11-5, 9-11, 14-12, 6-11, 11-7), before returning to the fray with the fixture on a knife-edge at two-all.

In the concluding match of the contest, she maintained her composure to recover from an opening game deficit to beat Madhurika Patkar (4-11, 11-2, 11-9, 11-6) and thus steered England to victory.....

The Hero in Manama, Once Again Soumyajit Ghosh is Indiaís Hero

Winner of the Junior Boysí Singles title at the ITTF Junior Circuit tournament in Dehradun in 2011 and one year later on duty at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Soumyajit Ghosh was Indiaís saviour in their Menís Team semi-final duel against the England at the Commonwealth Championships in New Delhi on Tuesday 7th May 2013.

He remained unbeaten to give the second seeds a three-two win over the third seeds.

Once again he proved the fact that he is the man to select when the pressure mounts.....
