Ask a Pro Anything: Kasumi Ishikawa Responda, As Always with a Bright Smile


Runner up at the recently concluded Women’s World Cup in the city of Sendai on Sunday 1st November, Kasumi Ishikawa became the first Japanese player ever to reach the final of the prestigious event; a tournament which made its debut in Hong Kong in 1996.

It was a smiling 22 year old who answered a plethora of questions from the local media as she sat next to her nemesis Liu Shiwen; although the very impressive winner of the event, she was not the player on whom the majority of questions were focused.

Runner up at the recent Liebherr 2015 Men’s World Cup, which concluded on Sunday 18th October in the Swedish town of Halmstad, China’s Fan Zhendong is very much the player, above all others, who has risen to prominence since the curtains closed at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Three years ago no-one was tipping him for a place in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games; now his name is the one that appears above all others when the topic is that of who will represent the Chinese Men’s Team next year in the Brazilian city.

A vital member of the Korean National Team for well over a decade, many accolades came the way of Ryu Seungmin, the most celebrated of all being in the Galatsi Stadium in Greece, when he won the Men’s Singles title at the 2014 Olympic Games.

Mental strength, athleticism showed through in Athens but according to Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov, Ryu Seungmin had one further feature in is favour that enabled him to succeed at the very highest level.

Athletic Sport, Pär Gerell Versus Adrien Mattenet, Now Watch Xu Xin


The Men’s Singles contest between Sweden’s Pär Gerell and Frenchman, Adrien Mattenet at the recent GAC Group 2015 Czech Open in Olomouc on Saturday 29th August, which saw the Swede eventually succeed in seven games will long be remembered not for the eventual score line (11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 9-11, 13-11, 9-11, 17-15) but for one point.

It was the 91 stroke rally that took the score from 10-all to 11-10 in the Swedes favour in the deciding game; they notable factor was that neither player was giving an exhibition, it was a crucial stage of the match.

Kasumi Ishikawa off the Table: Arrival Announced in Vrsac a Decade Ago


Almost a decade ago, at the 2006 ITTF World Cadet Challenge in the Serbian town of Vrsac, a 13 year old from Japan caught the eye; her name was Kasumi Ishikawa, since that date a great has happened to the talented left hander. who currently, alongside Ai Fukuhara, very much heads the challenge of her country wherever she plays.

In Vrsac, she ended the tournament with two gold medals and one bronze; it was to be the start of a quite prodigious collection.

Zhan Jian, Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, Announces Retirement


Crucial to the success of Singapore at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and gold medallist in the Men’s Singles event, Zhan Jian has announced his retirement from international play.

A recurrent elbow injury, which prevented him competing in the 2014 Asian Games 2014 and the 25th South East Asia Games, has caused the decision to be made; throughout last year’s Commonwealth Games, Zhan Jian had to receive pain killing injection and has not been able to compete on the GAC Group 2015 ITTF World Tour.

Ma Long On The Table in Suzhou, Now Enjoy Ma Long Off The Table


An earlier than anticipated exit in Zagreb in 2007, when beaten by Korea’s Joo Saehyuk in the fourth round of proceedings; then on the next three attempts, semi-final defeats at the hands of his more experienced colleague Wang Hao; on Sunday 3rd May, China’s Ma Long dispelled any doubts as to his pedigree in the city of Suzhou.

Earlier disappointments, when arguably he had not done himself justice on the big stage, were laid to rest as he beat Fang Bo, likewise from China, to win the Men’s Singles title at the Qoros 2015 World Championships.

Magdeburg Success Recognised, Japanese Duo Added to Guinness World Records


Victory over Poland’s Katarzyna Grzybowska and Natalia Partyka on Sunday 13th December in the final of the Women’s Doubles event at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Grand Finals in Bangkok secured a prize of US$ 40,000.

Some nine months earlier on Sunday 30th March, success at the same stage over the same partnership in Magdeburg, at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour German Open has secured place in history for Japan’s Miu Hirano and Mima Ito.

Player of Year Attracts Global Attention, BBC News Features Quadri Aruna


Elevated to the unprecedented heights on the Men’s World Ranking of no.30 last November, following his quite outstanding efforts at the Liebherr 2014 Men’s World Cup in the German city of Düsseldorf, Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna, became his continent’s highest ever rated player. He set new standards for Africa.

The result was that at the ITTF Star Awards Evening early this year he won not only the Player of the Year Award, also he secured the Point of the Year Award; his exchange with Zhang Jike at the quarter-final stage of the Men’s event in Düsseldorf gaining the admiration of the enthusiast.
