2016 PANAM Junior Championships (Click here to access this section)
Success for Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz two days earlier, when she won the Girls’ Singles title at the 2016 Panam Junior Championships in Burnaby, Canada; there was further success on Tuesday 28th June, in partnership with colleague Yomar Gonzalez.
The top prize in the Mixed Doubles event was secured.
Occupying the no.3 seeded position, they accounted for Brazil’s Rodrigo Yonesake and Alexia Nakashima, the no.6 seeds, at the final hurdle to claim the title (11-7, 11-1, 11-9).
“I feel very happy, we won against a very good mixed doubles team”, said Adriana Diaz. “It feels good to win with my great partner.”
She is not too bad a partner herself! It was a fact Yomar Gonzalez accepted.
“It feels very good to win this match”, he said. “Especially to win with my partner, the Panamerican Girls’ Champion Adriana Diaz!”
Challenge the Boys
In fact, I wonder how many boys in the tournament would beat her or Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi, the player Adriana Diaz beat in the Girls’ Singles final. Judging by the results the two players consistently achieve, they are a step ahead of the rest of the Pan American continent.
It will be interesting to see how they fare at the forthcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games when Adriana Diaz competes in the Women’s Singles event and Bruna Takahashi in the Women’s Team competition alongside Caroline Kumahara and Gui Lin.
Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games
Moreover, two years hence at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games can one or both gain a medal?
Hugo Calderano, like Bruna Takahashi from Brazil, secured a podium finish at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games; it is well within the capabilities of Adriana Diaz and Bruna Takahashi to emulate the feat of their male counterpart.
How about we break down some barriers? Let them play doubles together at World Championships, on the ITTF World Tour, ITTF Junior Circuit or ITTF Latin American Championships?
I hear about marketing and promotion; surely that combination would attract attention!
Remember Billie Jean King
How about on the last day of play Adriana Diaz and Bruna Takahashi play a doubles match against Kanak Jha and Jack Wang, the Boys’ Singles finalists?
Maybe most are two young to remember but the tennis match in Houston Texas in 1973 when Billie-Jean King played Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes”, gained worldwide publicity. Billie-Jean King won!
I’m backing Adriana and Bruna! Come on Pan American, think out of the box!
Gold for Yomar Gonzalez and Adriana Diaz, for Rodrigo Yonesake and Alexia Nakashima it was silver; the bronze medallists were Kanak Jha and Crystal Wang alongside Adar Alguetti and Angela Guan, both pairs being from the United States.
One day earlier at the semi-final stage, Rodrigo Yonesake and Alexia Nakashima had caused a major upset by beating Kanak Jha and Crystal Wang, the top seeds (11-7, 11-9, 8-11, 11-3); rather more predictably, Yomar Gonzalez and Adriana Diaz had beaten Adar Alguetti and Angela Guan, the no.9 seeds (11-8, 11-6, 11-8).
