Six Days to Go: Spanning History, Selection as Difficult Now as Three Decades Earlie

No player who competed in Seoul in 1988, the first time that table tennis was included in the Olympic Games, will be on duty at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games which start in Riocentro Pavilion 3 on Saturday 6th August.

However, there is one player in particular competing, who may well have had a claim to be considered had matters worked out differently and could have held an even stronger claim to have competed, when it was mooted, there was a possibility the sport may be held in 1984 in Los Angeles.

Chinaís Ma Long will be the top seed in the Menís Singles event at the forthcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games, play commencing in Riocentro Pavilion 3 on Saturday 6th August; that fact is confirmed by the World Rankings issued on Monday 1st August.

It is the list that will be used to determine matters at the draw ceremony scheduled for 12.00 noon on Wednesday 3rd August.

Seven Days to Go: Liu Jia Rewarded for Loyalty, Selected Standard Bearer for Austria

Winner of the Junior Girlsí Singles event at the European Youth Championships in Norcia, Italy in 1998, the title successfully retained one year later in Frydek-Mistek; ever since those achievements, Liu Jia has been a pivotal member of the Austrian Womenís Team.

Loyal to the cause; the dedication has been honoured; she has been chosen to carry the flag for Austria at the Opening Ceremony for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Friday 5th August.

Seven Days to Go: Fulfilling the Same Role, Bode Abiodun Treasures Opportunity

Selected time and again alongside Quadri Aruna and Segun Toriola for the Nigerian outfit in the Menís event earlier this year at the Perfect 2016 World Team Championships in Kuala Lumpur; Bode Abiodun once again fulfils the role he performed in the Malaysian capital city.

He lines up alongside the same two players in the Menís Team event at the forthcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games; he does not compete in the Menís Singles competition which commences on Saturday 6th August.

Seven Days to Go: New Names Join Stalwart, Jian Fang Lay Stands the Test of Time

Two new names plus one very much the same; that is the Australian womenís line-up at the forthcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games, play commencing in Riocentro Pavilion 3 on Saturday 6th August.

The new names are Melissa Tapper and Zhang Ziyu. They join forces with the tried and trusted Jian Fang Lay, a player who has stood the test of time.

Eight Days to Go: Absence Makes Heart Grow Fonder, Decision to Return Justified

Present at the Liebherr 2004 World Team Championships in Doha but then absent from the international scene for some eight years; in 2012, Colombiaís Lady Ruano returned to the international stage.

It was an Olympic year but an appearance in London was not realistic, that would only have happened in a Hollywood movie or a comic strip.

Galia Dvorak to Compete in Rio, Replaces Injured Carole Grundisch

Injury has forced 29 year old Carole Grundisch of France to withdraw from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games; she was scheduled to play in the Womenís Singles event.

She is replaced by Spainís Galia Dvorak who will line up alongside colleague, Shen Yanfei; proceedings commence in Riocentro Pavilion 3 on Saturday 6th August.

Nine Days to Go: Third Appearance, for Suraju Saka, Last Chance Saloon

Winner of the Menís Singles title at the 2008 African Championships in Kinshasa and in 2010 on duty at the Liebherr Menís World Cup in the Germany city of Magdeburg, Suraju Saka will be present in the colours of Congo Brazzaville at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Proceedings in the table tennis events commence on Saturday 6th August.
